Newsletter- March 2, 2010
Welcome to the first newsletter from A Few Square Feet.
It will go directly to those persons who I have an email address for, and who have attended a workshop; and, it is available online for the general public. I suspect that there will be a couple of newsletters a month at the beginning of the gardening season, once per month during the major growing season, and a couple during the winter months.
If you would like to subscribe to the newsletter, just send an email to:

ADDRESS LIST MISPLACED
To all who attended the Saturday workshop (February 27th) at St. Andrews: Please look through your papers from that day. It appears that someone picked up the sheet that had updated contact information on by mistake. It is not a big issue, since I had all but a couple of email addresses. I would appreciate you sending it back my way.
A GREAT TURNOUT
We had 22 persons at the very first workshop of the season. Of that group there were several of Haywood County’s Master Gardeners, some beginning gardeners, and everything in between. I believe that Square Foot Gardening will have a major impact in our area this summer. If you have friends, family or acquaintances that would benefit from a workshop, pass this newsletter along.
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
There are two more workshops scheduled this Spring-
March 20- 9AM-12 PM at the Old Armory in Waynesville. This will be a classroom style workshop.
April 17- 9AM- 12-PM at my garden in Waynesville. This will be a Hands-On workshop that will include instruction on building boxes, making Mel’s Mix, planting and spacing techniques, and getting a first-hand look at SFG techniques.
The good news- there are still a few spots left for both.
The bad news- they are going quickly.
More good news- I may schedule another workshop for early May to cover the overflow. Stay tuned.
BULK BUYING
It may be possible to save some money on some of the most expensive parts of getting into Square Foot Gardening. We already have made contact with Junaluska Feed Center about coarse vermiculite (this is the most expensive and most difficult component of Mel’s Mix to find). He may be able to offer a lower price on the bales of peat moss and bagged compost.
I will continue to track those possibilities and keep you posted.
If you would like to order vermiculite in 4 cu. ft. bags, please send me an email, and give me an estimate of how many bags you will need. (a 4×4 box requires just under one (1) bag)/a 3×8 box requires (1) bag)
I will put in an order on Fridays March 12 and March 26, 2010–and your bags will be available on Tuesdays March 16 and March 30, 2010.
I will need to have your request no later than 10AM on those Fridays. The cost will be around $18 dollars per bag, but if we can get a whole pallet, there will be a discount.
Again, there will be updates on the website.
NEED FURTHER SERVICES
Do you need boxes built? Do you need delivery of materials? Do you need help with design or layout?
I want everyone who wants to Square Foot Garden to get the opportunity. I believe that all of us working together can make it possible. I have resources that can build boxes and deliver materials if you need those services. I can help you with design and layout issues. There are others who may be able to assist with a truck or a tool.
Keep me informed of your needs and wants (and what you can offer), and I will try to match them with the needs of the group.
Send me an email or call me, and I will keep you posted.
NEW PHONE NUMBER
I have acquired a new phone number that I will be using specifically for A Few Square Feet:
(828) 476-4442
Use this number in the future. It has a better voice mail program, and allows me to keep job, personal and other business separate.
STAY IN TOUCH
The easiest way to reach me is by email. I rarely miss one, or fail to reply. Feel free to conact me:
